Students at the University of Calgary published a comprehensive research paper that analyzed Youtube traffic patterns. They proved conclusively that more people search Youtube and watch videos during the week. This is not surprising. But they also concluded that more Youtube searches occurred during daylight hours than at night. This is called a Diurnal pattern.
The steady INCREASE in traffic occurred from 8AM to about 1 PM. Then the traffic PEAKED between 2PM and 6 PM. After 7PM there is a steady DECLINE all the way until 7AM. Because of the amount of internet connected college students watching videos late in dorm rooms across the country, traffic RISES again from 12 Midnight to 4AM.
According to the graph below, the most popular Categories in which to post are: 1) Entertainment 2) Sports 3) Music 4) Comedy 5) News & Politics. Note that views in the News & Politics category drops as the subject matter ages.

Findings worth paying attention to:
-Popular videos in any category have a star rating of 4 or more.
-The average rating on Youtube is 3 stars.
-Over 52% of the videos in the all-time most popular category were 3-5 minutes long.
-The longer your video, the less likely it will be successful.
-Over have of the Videos searched for on Youtube at any time are for previously searched videos.
CONCLUSIONS ( This is what you should REALLY pay attention to):
1) The very best time to upload your video is during the week--specifically WED or THURS between 12PM & 1PM so that it will be finished processing by 2PM (The PEAK TRAFFIC TIME)
2) Make a Funny or Shocking Vid to get the most views. Quality is not a huge factor when considering VIRAL videos.
3) The MOST popular category is Entertainment but ultimately your category should be determined by relevance.
4) Make sure the Video is 2-5 Minutes unless the subject matter absolutely calls for something longer.
5) Encourage a 5 Star Rating on your Vids
6) Request as many users as possible as Friends. Don't spam but request channels as friends that you like & subscribe.
Most of the time, people subscribe back and that builds your view-count each time you upload a new video.
